Admission to the University and to the Engineering Program

UMass Boston encourages every interested person to apply for admission, and each application will be judged on its own merits. While most undergraduates enter the University directly from high school, others are older students who have been out of school for some years. The University welcomes applications from such non-traditional students.

Applicants wishing to enter the Engineering Program are expected to have strong preparation in mathematics and science. In some cases, applicants who do not meet these criteria may be admitted to the University as undeclared majors in the College of Science and Mathematics. After demonstrating proficiency in mathematics and science courses at UMass/Boston, these students may apply for admission through the director of the Engineering Program.

Transfer Policy

Transfer applicants from other institutions who have earned fewer than 30 semester credits must have official copies of both their high school and their college transcripts sent to the Admissions Office (617-287-6000; TTY/TDD, for hearing impaired users: 617-287-6010). Those who have earned 30 or more semester credits only need to have official copies of their college transcripts sent to the Admissions Office. A maximum of 40 credits, which must be in courses applicable to the program, may be transferable into UMass Boston’s Engineering Program.

Prospective transfer applicants should note that certain Engineering Program courses must be completed at UMass Boston. They should also be aware that the cooperating institution to which the student transfers from UMass Boston will decide on the total number of credits transferable into the junior year. For further information, write or call the Office of the Engineering Program, University of Massachusetts at Boston, Harbor Campus, Boston, MA 02125-3393, 617-287-6050.

Students already enrolled at the University may apply to the program director for transfer into the Engineering Program, after demonstrating proficiency in their mathematics and science courses at UMass Boston.

Please note: Students enrolled in UMass Boston’s Engineering Program may choose to remain at the University and to become engineering physics majors instead of completing the second two years of their engineering program at another institution. Information of the Physics Department’s engineering physics major is available from the office of the Engineering Program, S-3-105.
